One of the oldest ski resorts in the world and host of the first Winter Olympics in 1924, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, to give it its full title, attracts skiers, mountaineers and nature-lovers generally from all over the globe.

The main ski areas are Brévent/ Flégère accessible from Chamonix town centre; Les Grands Montets above Argentière and Le Balme, accessed from Le Tour. In addition there are several beginners' areas for those that are new to skiing or boarding. At the south-western end of the valley, Les Houches is also included on the Mont-Blanc Unlimited pass. A free bus service connects all the areas of the valley.

Chamonix also has one of the world's highest cable cars up the to Aiguille du Midi (3842m). The views from the top are incredible over the valley below and far beyond as well as up to the summit of Mt. Blanc (4810m), amazingly still another vertical kilometre above you! From the top, you can take two further lifts down to Courmayeur on the Italian side or for more experienced skiiers why not try skiing the legendary Vallée Blanche? The services of a mountain guide are essential, (to avoid the deep crevasses in the glacier,) on this 20km 4-5 hour descent which will stay with you forever. At the bottom of the Mer de Glace glacier you can either take the Train du Montenvers back to Chamonix or, conditions permitting, ski right back to the town.

Chamonix offers an almost endless range of activities including mountaineering, paragliding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, swimming & skating. There are plenty of après-ski options too, with a wide range of retaurants, bars & clubs and a casino.
